Achter de Dom 7 Engels

A large number of medieval churches still dominate the city centre of Utrecht. This is no wonder, since Utrecht used to be a Bishop's See during the Middle Ages. Less striking are the many medieval house Utrecht possesses. Right now we assume that hundreds of medieval houses have been preserved, most of them hidden behind modern facades. One of the most appealing houses is situated on the street Achter de Dom 7 (behind the cathedral), with the sturdy, ''defensible'' shape of it's crenelated towerhouse. The house used to be owned by one of the Canons of the Chapter of the Dom Church. Its location can only be explained by means of the history of the Episcopal citadel in the Roman castellum, so that the ancient history of Utrecht will also be dealth with. The building Achter de Dom 7 is mentioned and depicted in numerous publications, but on close inspections only a few facts about the building were known. Therefore, the restoration on behalf of the establishing of the Faculty Club in 1998, gave raise to extensive architectural-historic research. Research was done by J.A. Kipp and B.J.M. Kluck of the 'Archeologisch en Bouwhistorisch Centrum van Bureau Monumenten van de gemeente Utrecht''. Preliminary research and disclosure of the wall paintings was done by M. Tjon A Kauw en P. Dijkman, art-historic research by M. van Vlierden. New evidence came up during the research, wich turned out to be major additions to the history of the building. This evidence is hereby presented for the very first time.
