Leeuwenbergh Engels
It is significant that this publication has been called Leeuwenbergh, the many appearances of a sixteenth-century pest house. Throughout the centuries Leeuwenbergh has known many appearances. In 1567 Leeuwenbergh was founded as a house for poor inhabitants of Utrecht. It served as a pest house for a long period. In the course of the 19th century Leeuwenbergh was rebuilt into a chemical laboratory. In 1938 the building was rented to the Vrijzinnig Hervormden and the Nederlandse Protestantenbond. From then on the building was used as a church. In 1990 the religious community appeared to have run out of money and could not maintain the building any longer. A foundation, Stichting Vrienden van Leeuwenbergh, was established. It aimed at making the building into a centre for cultural activities and a place where religious meetings could take place from time to time. At the moment, it is still this foundation which owns the building and which has rented it to the city of Utrecht on behalf of Muziekcentrum Vredenburg.
