St. Catherine's Church
Walking from the Domplein to the Fundatie van Renswoude, across the Korte and Lange Nieuwstraat, halfway along, the row of houses on the left gives way to allow space for a church which has dominated the street for centuries. The St. Catharine's Church was the last church to be built in Utrecht in de Middle Ages, after churches such as the Domkerk, Buurkerk an Janskerk. Ninety years after construction commenced in 1468, a sober and spacious church had risen on the Lange Nieuwstraat. The history of the Catharijnekerk reveals how a simple cloister church grew into the cathedral of the Roman Catholic achbishop of Utrecht and the primary church of Catholics in the Netherlands.
